Referees are often unable to stand on the field and catch everything at a glance, they often make wrong decisions. The result can change a wrong decision at a crucial moment in the game. The Decision Review System (DRS) has solved much of that problem.
Now the batting or bowling team can appeal the court umpire’s decision if they wish. The third referee can make the correct decision by observing the replay. However, even in this beautiful rule, the ‘call of the referees’ seems to have turned into a thorn.
Some power has also been left in the hands of the referees. For example, if a referee makes a decision in favor of a batting or bowling team, it will not be overruled unless it is fully proven wrong. The referee’s decision will remain intact.
Despite various demands from players and supporters, the ICC is not in favor of lifting the “referee call” process. However, they have made some modifications to the LBW rules.
A few more rules have been approved on the recommendation of the ICC Cricket Committee headed by Anil Kumble. The highest governing body of cricket confirmed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to the new rules, if the court umpire gives a ‘no out’ on an LBW review, it will not be considered if the ball has hit the bottom of the Bells as before. From now on, even if the ball hits the top of the ball, that is, even if it receives some part of the ball, the batter will be eliminated.
Previously, batters would have survived as ‘umpires call’ if the ball only rang the bells and the umpire did not give up. The fielding team review would have survived, but the outfield referee’s decision would not have changed. That will change from now on.
The ICC Cricket Committee has made two more changes. Before doing a lbw check, the field umpire may be asked if the batter is at bat. The third referee will check before the next delivery if the batters are running and completing runs correctly.
Corona’s ban on the use of saliva, the appointment of local referees and the rules for keeping covid substitutes in the Trials, which were temporarily approved by the ICC, will continue until further notice.
