Commenting that Moudud was ‘talented’, he said that if he had used his patriotism, he could have given a lot to the country.
On the opening day of the twelfth session of the 11th Parliament on Thursday, the Prime Minister spoke on the motion of mourning presented for the death of Deputy Sylhet-3 Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury.
At one point, the issue of Moudud, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, arose during the tenure of Deputy Prime Minister Ziaur Rahman, Vice President of HM Ershad.
The Prime Minister said: “We have to talk about another gentleman: lawyer Moudud Ahmed. He never did Chhatra League though. He was always a bit close to the government. However, when he arrived in Bangladesh in 1989 after passing law school, he learned that he was always the son-in-law of the daughter of the poet Jasimuddin.
“But part of his job was a little different from time to time. So he was arrested once in ’73. Because he was smuggling secret information from Bangladesh. The same poet Jasimuddin Sahib came to our house. At the request of the Father of the Bangabandhu Nation, he was released. “
Moudud Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s standing committee, died on March 18 while receiving treatment at a Singapore hospital. He was 61 years old.
After independence, Barrister Moudud, son-in-law of the poet Jasimuddin, was appointed the country’s first postmaster general.
Later, Moudud joined the country’s first military ruler, Ziaur Rahman. His role in the formation of the BNP was important. Zia appointed him minister and later deputy prime minister.
After Zia’s death, Moudud took the hand of the military ruler Hussein Muhammad Ershad. During Ershad’s nine-year rule, he also served as minister, deputy prime minister, prime minister, and vice president.

Moudud remained in the Jatiya Party even after the fall of the Ershad government. He returned to BNP after losing the 1996 parliamentary elections. He was minister of law in the government of the BNP-Jamaat alliance from 2001 to 2006.
Discussing the mourning motion in Parliament on Thursday, BNP MP Harunur Rashid said that lawyer Moudud had acted as Bangabandhu’s lawyer in the Agartala conspiracy case.
Regarding the claim written in Moudud Ahmed’s biography, Sheikh Hasina said: “The case that was occurring when the Father of the Bangabandhu Nation was arrested in the Agartala conspiracy case, of course it is written in his biography (Moudud ) that he was a lawyer.
In fact, he was not a designated attorney. He said. Kamal used to hang out with Mr. Hossain and the PS from Bangabandhu, Mohammad Hanif. He was with that group the whole time. In particular, he had a very close relationship with Barrister Amirul Islam. The two always walked together.
“I still remember when Ayub Khan called a panel discussion and offered to put Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib on probation in the Agartala case, my mother took a difficult step. She said she should drop the case and leave as a free man. It will not come out in probation. I took this information from my mother and passed it on to my father. “
The Prime Minister said: “Many of our leaders were present inside the cantonment where the prisoners were kept. Tajuddin Ahmed, Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia, Amirul Islam, Dr. Kamal Hossain, Barrister Moudud and other leaders were present. They were ready to take Bangabandhu on probation and that’s what they tried to say. But when I relayed my mother’s message to him, of course, Bangabandhu himself decided that he would not leave unless he was released. “
Describing the incident that day, Bangabandhu’s eldest daughter, Sheikh Hasina, said: “After receiving my mother’s message and returning home, I am alone on the two-story veranda. Amirul Islam and Moudud came to see me. He came to me and told me this, Amirul Islam said it, and Moudud agreed with him saying, ‘What kind of girl are you? Don’t you want your father to come back from jail?
“In response, I said, ‘Yes, my father will return with honor.’ Don’t spread all this confusion. He (Moudud) always does some of these things … but whatever he says, there are many controversial things in his writing escritos he writes with the sweetness of his mind. “
Referring to Moudud Ahmed’s party change, the prime minister said: “He always liked to change parties. When the Awami League had a chance to come to power, it joined us in ’69. After age 75 it joined BNP. “He was a convicted felon. General Ershad pardoned him and appointed him Minister of Justice in the cabinet. He rejoined the BNP. He had a habit of changing parties over and over again in politics. No doubt about it.”
“Even then, I would say he was a talented man, but he could have given a lot to the country if he had used his patriotism, that’s the reality.”
Referring to the mourning of Moudud Ahmed’s death, the Prime Minister said: “After his death, I personally called Hasna (Moudud’s wife) because I knew Hasna; I speak with him. I have also conveyed my deepest condolences.”
