The highest number of victims in the last three days of violent protests has occurred in the district of Brahmanbaria. Although fighting broke out in the Baitul Mukarram area of Dhaka over the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has turned into the most violent form in Brahmanbaria.
Of the 12 confirmed deaths, eight are from the district. Many government offices and cultural institutions were burned in the city on Sunday.
What exactly happened in Brahmanbaria that created such a violent situation there?
That kind of attack has happened
Like many other cities in the district, the city of Brahmanbaria is built around a road. The name of the road is TA Road.
Everything that is important to the city is found on both sides of this road.
According to the local administration, journalists and eyewitnesses, several government buildings in addition to the district headquarters municipality, Shilpakala, the central library, the municipal auditorium, the land office and the press club were set on fire on both sides of TA Road. The violence continues from 11 at night.
A train was attacked, passing in front of the burning station the day before.
What exactly is the outbreak of violence on Sunday?
Hefazat-e-Islam has alleged that the 100-year-old Jamia Yunusia madrassa in the district was attacked by an Awami League procession on Saturday night.
Local journalists also cited such an attack, saying it caused more anger there.
Mufti Enamul Haque, advertising secretary for Hefazat-e-Islam in Brahmanbaria, complained: “There is a 100-year-old madrasa in Brahmanbaria called Jamia Islami Yunusia Madrasa.” When there was an attack from the BCL procession, the common people of Brahmanbaria got angry about this.
However, he has denied responsibility for arson and vandalism.
‘The main program of Hefazat-e-Islam was with the arrival of Modi. But the leaders of some political parties have created chaos. The people of Brahmanbaria are pointing out to the local MP that all this has happened at their behest. Hefazat-e-Islam is not involved in acts of vandalism. Those who attacked the madrasa the day before have carried out these attacks to spread slander on our behalf.
What is the statement of the member of parliament?
Hefazat-e-Islam is not responsible for the massive arson and vandalism in the city, nor is the MP against whom the group has made accusations.
The Sadar area is under the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency. Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, a member of Parliament from this constituency, led the procession on Saturday night.
It says that the procession did not enter the madrasa area at all.
He says: ‘There is nothing true in his accusations. There was a procession. The day before, Bangabandhu’s morale was broken, the administration and police offices were attacked, the train station was set on fire, for all these reasons we organized a protest procession. He did not enter the area of this madrasa. I am absolutely defiant. I will tell them (Hefazat-e-Islam) not to take refuge in lies. ‘
However, he says, ‘A group of rebellious people who have a vision may have entered from behind the procession. But I do not know. Since I was ill, I left before the procession ended.
On Sunday, the interior minister told reporters that the nature of the attack showed that members of the banned militant group were involved in the situation. So Jamaat Shibir is providing fuel.
If a third party does so much destruction, no one has the answer. No comment was received from the local administration for speaking with the senator.
The district police have been under attack since the protests began in Brahmanbaria.
