Twenty citizens of the country have said that the government has celebrated the golden jubilee of glorious independence in a narrow and partisan way.
They said in a statement on Saturday that the invitation would have been appropriate had it been extended to the president of India due to the ongoing controversy over the current prime minister of India.
The statement read: “Yesterday was the golden jubilee of independence for Bangladesh. We believe that this glorious day has been closely observed by the government and from the party’s point of view. On the occasion of the day, the Government of Bangladesh invited several heads of state and government, including the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. In view of the assistance or cooperation of India in the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence, it was expected that an appropriate representative of India would be invited to celebrate the day.
Speakers are M Hafiz Uddin Khan, Ali Imam Majumder, Anu Muhammad, Badiul Alam Majumder, CR Abrar, Jafrullah Chowdhury, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Parveen Hasan, Sara Hossain, Asif Nazrul, Shahidul Alam, Nur Khan, Shirin Haque, Hassanat Qayyum Hossa , Lubna Maryam, Sharmin Murshid, Ferdous Azim, Nayla Zaman Khan, and Rehnuma Ahmed.
“We also think that the citizens of Bangladesh have the right to protest against the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh on the charge of any activity and statement against Bangladesh,” they said in a statement. It is very worrying that in recent days, people from different walks of life, including progressive student organizations, have been tortured by the police and the BCL in protest. In one such incident in Hathazari, several students from the madrassa were killed in a police shootout.
The statement strongly condemned the events and demanded justice for the police personnel, the agents and the people. “These attacks violate the fundamental rights of the citizens of Bangladesh and tarnish our independence,” they said.
The statement added: “We must all remember that the people have constitutional freedom and the right to protest in a constitutional manner.” We consider it a cruel mockery of the goal of independence of this country and the spirit of the war of liberation by trying to suppress this right by shooting and torture on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of independence. We vigorously protest and express our deepest resentment. “
