Security forces have shot dead at least 21 people during protests against a military coup in Myanmar. Police in riot gear stormed a demonstration on Sunday (March 14), removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
The BBC reports that security forces clashed with protesters on Sunday in the Hlaing Tharia area of Yangon. The protesters tried to defend themselves with knives and sticks. When the clashes began, the security forces opened fire on them.

The junta imposed martial law in the area after an attack on a Chinese businessman. Meanwhile, protesters think China is supporting the military.
On February 1, the military overthrew the civilian government and seized power. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won the country’s general elections in November 2020 by an overwhelming majority. But since the results came out, the army has been accused of rigging the elections.
The accusations led to the overthrow of the civilian government and the arrest of several leaders of his party, including Suu Kyi. Since then, Myanmar has been full of protests. Teachers, students, doctors and people of different classes and professions in the country have started protesting against the government of the junta.
Meanwhile, the security forces took a tough stance to stop the protests. On the other hand, politicians who have gone into hiding since the military coup have announced that they will continue their fight against the military authorities. They claim to be the legitimate government of Myanmar.

“This is the darkest time for the nation,” said Mahan Win Khyang Than, head of a committee of hidden politicians. But the light will be seen very soon.
Khyang Than is hiding with a group of MPs who did not accept last month’s coup. The NLD MPs who escaped arrest fled and formed a new group called the Paidungsu Haltu Representative Committee (CRPH). Mahan Win Khyang Than has been appointed acting head of the party. CRPH seeks international recognition as the legitimate government of Myanmar.
