With 54.28 percent of the votes, the Catalan lawyer and politician Laporta returned to the Barcelona office after 11 years, leaving behind Víctor Fant and Tony Friesa. He previously served as president of Barcelona from 2003 to 2010.
Laporta spoke to the Barcelona captain during his victory speech, singing club music with his campaign team, whose contract with the club is less than four months old.
“Twenty years ago, a boy named Lionel Messi made his debut with Bar, a youth team. Seeing the best footballer in the world come to vote today (Sunday) is a clear indication of what we have been talking about: Leo loves Barça.
“The best footballer in the world loves Barça and I think it is an indication that he will stay in Barcelona, which is what we all want.”
Messi’s contract with the Catalan team comes to an end this season. He wanted to leave the club at the end of last season. But the 33-year-old star stuck with it despite the club’s reluctance to accept.
The club’s top scorer later expressed dissatisfaction with then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu. With many more tensions, Bartomeu was forced to resign last October.
The record-breaking six-time Footballer of the Year later said he would decide his future after the new president arrived at the club.
