Rajibul Alam Ivan, 52, a professor at Pakshi Railway College in Ishwardi, has been arrested in the Digital Security Act case. The court granted one day of preventive detention to the teacher.
In Kushtia, the deputy general secretary of the Awami League, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, and his cousin Kushtia Sadar Upazila, president of the Awami League, Ataur Rahman Ata, were arrested in a case brought by the leader of the Juba League for insulting him.
University professor Rajibul Alam’s lawyer, lawyer Enamul Haque, confirmed the information on Friday.
He said that the investigating officer on the case, Kushtia Model Police Deputy Inspector Masudur Rahman, introduced the defendant in Kushtia court, Kushtia’s Additional Chief Magistrate Judge Rezaul Karim, on Wednesday and called for a five-day pre-trial detention for be interrogated. The court granted a one-day preventive detention after the hearing.
According to judicial sources, the criminals vandalized the Bangabandhu mural under construction at the intersection of five roads in the city of Kushtia on the night of December 4 last year. Two madrasa students and two teachers were arrested on the basis of CCTV footage in a case brought by the municipality at the Kushtia model police station. The incident was widely discussed across the country.
Many people have been posting on Facebook about this incident. Saad Ahmed, a professor in the political science department of the same faculty, gave a post about the vandalism of this mural under construction by Bangabandhu.
Based on the status of his colleague, Rajibul Alam Ivan, a computer science professor at the same university, he blamed the Awami League’s deputy general secretary, Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, and his cousin Kushtia Sadar Upazila, president of the Awami League, Ataur Rahman Ata, for the incident.
Kushtia Sadar Upazila Juba League leader Mizanur Rahman Mizu was upset to see this insulting post on verified Facebook ID of university professor Rajibul Alam. He filed the case with the Kushtia Model Police Station under the Digital Security Act on December 14 last year with a screenshot of the page.
Teacher Rajibul Alam Ivan was out on eight-week bail from the high court in the case. According to the instructions of the higher court, on 18 February the Kushtia Chief Judge in question appeared before the court of Judge Syed Habibul Islam and requested bail. The court rejected his request for bail and ordered that he be sent to jail. The university professor has been housed in the Kushtia District Jail ever since.
