Attack on the car of the United States ambassador: Charge sheet against 9 people

Police filed a charge sheet against nine members of the Awami League and the Chhatra League for allegedly being involved in the August 2016 attack on the convoy of former US Ambassador Marsha Bernikat.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police filed the charge sheet with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court (CMM) on January 20.

Today Friday, the investigating officer and the DB police inspector. Abdur Rauf confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.

Naimul Hasan, Firoz Mahmud, Mir Amzad Hossain, Shahidul Alam Khan, Tanha aka Mujahid, Saju Islam, Rajibul Islam and Md. Of the local Awami League and the Chhatra League in the case filed at the Mohammadpur Police Station on August 10 2016. Charges have been brought against Siam and Oli Ahmed.

Nine defendants appear as fugitives on the charge sheet.

However, judicial sources said that three of the accused were at large from the beginning. Six others were granted bail on February 26 this year.

According to the case statement, on August 4, 2017, then-US Ambassador Marsha Bernikat attended a dinner at the Mohammadpur home of Badiul Alam Majumdar, the Citizens’ Secretary for Good Governance (Sujan). On the way back to Bernikat around 11 pm after dinner, between 30 and 40 unidentified gunmen attacked the ambassador’s car. The assailants chased the convoy and threw brick bats. They were carrying pistols and sticks and they attacked the house of Badiul Alam Majumdar and tried to enter the house.

Sujan’s secretary, Badiul Alam Majumder, presented a case to the Mohammadpur Police Station.
