Bangladesh wants to buy another 40 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the Seram Institute in India. This information has been exposed in the Reuters news agency report quoting Bangladesh’s health secretary Abdul Mannan.
“Negotiations are underway,” the health secretary told Reuters on Thursday. Let’s see what happens. Reuters contacted the Seram Institute to find out, but declined to comment.
On November 5, the government of Bangladesh signed an agreement with Beximco Pharmaceuticals to purchase 30 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZenec vaccine from the Seram Institute in India. 6 million doses of the vaccine have already reached Bangladesh in two shipments. Previously, 2 million doses of vaccine were delivered to Bangladesh as a gift from India. Which arrived in Bangladesh on January 21.
The health secretary told Reuters that the government had not yet decided through whom it would bring the vaccine, even though it was currently importing the vaccine from the Seram Institute of India through Beximco Pharmaceuticals.
“We have not yet ordered an additional dose of the vaccine,” Beximco Chief Operating Officer (COO) Rabbur Reza told Reuters. So far our order is for three crore doses. It is up to the government to order more doses.
The health secretary told Reuters that Bangladesh would also receive 68 million doses of the vaccine through the Alliance backed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Around one crore dose is expected to be available in the first shipment in June.
According to the latest data from the Department of Health, five lakh 46,549 people infected with coronavirus have so far been identified in the country. 8,435 people died. And five lakh 46 people have recovered.
The Health Department said in a statement that the first dose of the Oxford-Astragene vaccine had been administered to 35,71,179 people since the start of the national vaccination program on Thursday.
