Bangladesh wants to buy another 40 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the Serum Institute of India. Health Secretary Abdul Mannan told Reuters on Thursday.

Bangladesh is already receiving the vaccine under the 30 million dose purchase agreement. In addition, Bangladesh has received 2 million doses of vaccines as a gift from the Government of India. The serum produces the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine called Covishield.

Health Secretary Abdul Mannan said the talks were ongoing. Let’s see what happens.

There was no response to Seram’s comment on the matter.

The health secretary said Bangladesh is expecting to receive 68 million doses of vaccine from the Covax initiative backed by the World Health Organization. The first shipment is expected to receive 10 million doses in June.

Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited is the sole distributor of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Bangladesh. Abdul Mannan said the government has not yet decided who will buy the vaccine in the future.

Rabbur Reza, Beximco’s chief operating officer, said: “We have not received any requests for additional doses. So far we have 30 million doses to buy. It is up to the government to buy additional vaccines.
