Journalist Burhan Uddin Muzakkir, 25, was shot dead in a clash between two factions of the Awami League at Chaprashirhat Bazar in Noakhali’s Kompaniganj.
He died in the ICU of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11:15 pm on Saturday.
The DMCH police outpost in charge (inspector) Bachchu Mia confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.
He said: “Borhan Uddin died in the hospital ICU around 11:15 pm.”
Earlier, a clash between supporters of two groups of the Awami League took place against Chaprashirhat Tarkari Bazar in the Charfakira Union of upazila around 5pm yesterday. Journalist Muzakki was shot while covering the confrontation.
He was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital after being rescued. Later, he was sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment around 8pm yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Borhan Uddin, a resident of Charfakira Union in Muzakki upazila. He is a Companyganj correspondent for the Barta Bazar newspaper.
According to local sources, the organizing secretary of the Upazila Awami league and former president of Upazila, Mizanur Rahman Badal, asked his followers to be present at the Chaprashirhat party office at 4.30pm yesterday. But before that, his supporters led by the president of the Charfakira union, Jamal Uddin Liton, arrived at the office. At the appointed time, the Badal supporters had a discussion with the Litón supporters at the party office. At one point there were chases, clashes and shootings between supporters on both sides. At least 50 leaders and activists from both sides were injured. Barta Bazar representative Burhan Uddin Muzakkir was shot while gathering news.
Municipal Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza claimed his leaders and activists were attacked in Chaprashirhat Bazar after the clash came live from his Facebook ID.
Quader Mirza said that at least 50 of its leaders and activists were injured in the attack. The Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, the President of Companiganj Upazila Parishad, Shahab Uddin, the MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Nizam Hazari and the former President of Upazila, Mizanur Rahman Badal, will have to take responsibility if any of their leaders and activists dies.
