Arjun became the latest cricketer to be named at the IPL auction in Chennai on Thursday. Mumbai got the young pacemaker with a base price of Rs 20 lakh on the first call. No other franchise showed interest.
Arjun played two Youth Trials for the India Under-19 team in Sri Lanka in 2016. But he did not get a place on the Youth World Cup team. He later played for the second Mumbai XI and the main team in various exhibition and preparation matches.
Arjun made his national cricket debut last month. The 21-year-old left-armed fast pitcher won two wickets in two games for Mumbai at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was a network pitcher for Mumbai in the last edition of the IPL.
During the India tour of England in 2016, Arjun led to many discussions as an English net pitcher. Johnny Bairstow left the net with an injury to his yorker.
Jayawardene believes that Arjun has enough skill. He said at the end of the auction that they brought him to the team to give him a chance to learn.
“We saw him (take Arjun on the team) based on skill. Thanks to Sachin, he has a great badge attached. But luckily, he is a bowler, not a batsman. I think if Sachin could bowl like Arjun, he would be proud too. “
“It is a learning process for Arjun. He just started playing for Mumbai, now for this franchise. It will develop gradually as you learn what to do. He is still young, very attentive. We have to give it time. I hope it is not put under too much pressure. You just have to be more discriminatory with the help you give other people. We will help him in this place. ”
Mumbai Indians has always been an ideal school for young people. Thanks to this franchise, Jaspreet Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandia have made a name for themselves as big stars. Zaheer said the franchise has taken Arjun in as part of this process.
“As for our team, we have always stood by the youth’s side year after year. We have always given them opportunities looking for talent. This auction was no exception. We have been able to build a great combination of youth and experience. That was the process and we will continue it. “
“Once again we have some exciting young talents and Arjun is definitely one of them. When we went to Abu Dhabi for the last IPL, he was with this team. He has spent a lot of time with us ”.
