An order has been established for February 23 to file a sedition case against four people involved in a report titled “All the Prime Minister’s Men” broadcast on the Qatar-based television channel Al Jazeera. The defendants in the petition filed in a Dhaka court are: British journalist David Bergman, Swedish expatriate journalist Tasnim Khalil, Bangladeshi Hungarian expatriate Zulkarnain Sami, and Al Jazeera Mostafa Soyag’s CEO and editor-in-chief.
Abdul Malek, aka Mashiur Malek, Executive Chairman of the Bangabandhu Foundation, presented the case at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate on Thursday. Ashek Imam court has set February 23 for the order.
The petition in the case stated: “The defendants are involved in the crime of sedition by carrying out propaganda in the international arena for the same purpose and tarnishing the reputation of the government and state of Bangladesh.” Together with their anonymous collaborators, they created a false and misleading report titled ‘All the Prime Minister’s Men’ on the night of February 1. They also widely distributed the report on YouTube.
The statement further read: “The defendant did not make any specific and clear statement in the report and without presenting any data or documents, the defendant conspiratorially and deliberately edited the voice using only some private family events and interviews. Al-Jazeera has released the information about the misuse of information technology by reporting organized documentaries and broadcasting propaganda around the world through YouTube, including television. It has damaged the reputation and dignity of the government and state of Bangladesh in the country and abroad The accused has committed a crime under article 124/124 (a) / 109/34 of the Penal Code.
