The eight defendants in the case are: Major Syed Ziaul Haque Zia, Akram Hossain alias Hasib alias Abir alias Adnan alias Abdullah, Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Imran, Abdur Sabur Samad alias Sujan alias Raju, Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Jisel, Abu Siddique Alias Shakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon alias Shahriar and Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Zayed alias Jabed alias Abu Omayer.
Among the defendants, Zia and Akram are at large. The rest have been arrested and are in jail. All the detainees have admitted their involvement in the murder and made statements in court under article 164. Police say they are all members of the banned militant group Ansar al-Islam.
Dipan’s father, Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, a retired professor at Dhaka University, declined to comment before the verdict. However, Plaintiff Dipan’s wife, Razia Rahman, is not satisfied that the two defendants have not been arrested.

Writer and blogger Abhijit Roy was beaten to death at the TSC during the Bangla Academy Ekushey Book Fair in 2015, the year Dipan was assassinated. A few months later, several bloggers and writers, including Niladri Chattopadhyay Nilay, were killed.
On October 31, the day that Dipan was assassinated in Jagriti Prakashan’s office on the third floor of the Aziz Super Market, another publisher entered Shuddhaswar’s office in Lalmatia and three others, including its owner Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul, were angered. However, three people survived, including Tutul.
The science writer Abhijit Roy’s book was published in Jagriti and Shuddhasvara. In both cases, the militant group Ansar al-Islam was named.
According to the police, Dipan was killed on the instructions and instructions of Zia, the military commander of the militant group.
Following the murder of Faisal Arefin Dipan, his wife Razia Rahman filed a murder case with the Shahbagh Police Station on the same day.
Three years later, on November 15, 2016, Fazlur Rahman, DB Deputy Police Commissioner, the investigating officer of the case, filed a charge sheet with the Main Metropolitan Magistrates Court of Dhaka. A total of 26 people were called as witnesses for the state on the charge sheet.
The trial of the accused began in this court on October 13, 2019 with the formation of charges. The court then heard testimony from a total of 23 people on behalf of the state.
On the other hand, the accused prisoner demanded justice by claiming his innocence at the defense hearing on January 5.
