The West Indies won the draw and chose to bat against BCB XI during the lunch break on the first day of the three-day prep game in Chittagong.
Starter John Campbell went with 44 runs over 6 fours and 1 six. Another starter and captain Craig Brathwaite was undefeated on 32 of 72 balls.
Shortly before lunch, Bangladesh had a chance to return Brathwaite for 25 races. But leg shooter Rishad Hossain released the catch back.
No specialized left-arm spinners or off-spinners were included in the BCB team for the match to prevent the West Indies from preparing well. The party gate was not given and the turn was not useful. Coach Phil Simmons has already said that the Caribbeans see no flaw in this Bangladeshi strategy. Shahadat Hossain, the irregular off-spinner of BCB XI, however, suffered greatly with the Caribbean. The only gate is your victim.
Congratulations to Shahadat’s teammates after Campbell’s return.
Syed Khaled Ahmed played lively in the morning at the dead grass gate. It is important for him to perform in this match to be in the final squad of the Test. The pacemaker was quite aggressive even though it didn’t get a wicket. He threw 8 overs drawn from one winger until the first drinking break. Even after the break he made another. His drawn spell was 6-2-22-0.
The match started with a big delivery from Khaled off Stump. The extra bounce made Brathwaite-Campbell uncomfortable several times. Brathwaite touched the edge of the bat and the ball didn’t slide twice for a while.
At the other extreme, young pacemaker Mukidul Islam started with two deliveries outside the stump of his leg, but did not go badly afterward.
Brathwaite got rid of the initial discomfort by hitting four on a great one drive from Mukidul. Khaled was hit by four with a point back on the square and Campbell got the first limit.
After third fast pitcher Shahin Alam came on the attack, the Caribbeans’ running speed increased a bit more on loose bowling. The young pacemaker was hit four times in two consecutive overs by Campbell. It also reached six. After giving 22 runs in the first 3 overs, Shahin was pushed to the other extreme. So you see a bit of control in his bowling alley.
The inherently aggressive hitter Campbell played a series of offensive shots. As the career grows, so does the risk. In the end, it was that trend that led to his downfall. He was caught in the middle trying to blow up Shahadat. The first pair of 7 runs was broken.
Brathwaite played as slowly as he. His focus is more on terrain than racing. Shane Mozley accompanied the captain until lunch.
Leg shooter Rishad was off the field at the start of the match, but then got off and turned his hand before lunch for 2 overs.
Short score (until lunch):
West Indies: 69/1 in 26 overs (Brathwaite 32 *, Campbell 44 *, Mozli 9 *; Khaled 6-2-22-0, Mukidul 6-3-14-0, Shahin 6-0-26-0, Shahadat 4-1 – 15-1, Rishad 2-0-6-0).
