In December 2016, an eight-page research article entitled ‘A New Dimension of Colonialism and Pop Culture: A Case Study of Cultural Imperialism’, co-authored by Samia Rahman and Marjan, was published in the journal ‘Social Science Review’ of the University.
It is alleged to have been a nearly five-page copy of an article titled “The Subject and Power” by French philosopher Michel Foucault, published in the 1982 Critical Inquiry magazine of the University of Chicago.
In September 2016, the University of Chicago Press reported the theft to Dhaka University authorities through a written complaint.
Not only Michelle Foucault, but also Samia and Marjan were accused of copying page after page of the intellectual Edward Sayed’s book ‘Culture and Imperialism’.

In light of this, on September 27, 2016, the University Union formed a research committee headed by the then Vice Chancellor (Education) of Dhaka University, Professor Nasrin Ahmed. The committee presented its report last year after a lengthy investigation.
As the complaints were accredited in the report, on October 29, the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law and member of the union, Prof. Md. Would recommend punishing their academic crimes. A tribunal was formed summoning Rahmat Ullah.
The final decision was made at a union meeting Thursday after the court presented a recommendation on punishment to the university administration.
Professor Humayun Kabir said: “Samia Rahman has been demoted from associate professor to associate professor for two years. After two years, the union will consider your promotion.
“And since Marjan is a teacher and is abroad, she will have to stay in the same position for two years after joining at the end of her study license. After working as a speaker for two years, you can apply for a promotion. “
On the other hand, the degree of Adjunct Professor Omar Farooq from the Department of History and Culture of Islam was canceled at a union meeting in 2016 after allegations of forgery were proven in his doctoral thesis. But then he did not receive any academic punishment.
A three-member court headed by union member and lawyer AFM Mezbah Uddin was formed at the union meeting on October 29 to determine his sentence.
Professor Humayun Kabir said: “Omar Farooq has been demoted from assistant professor to lecturer as punishment and his thesis has been withdrawn.”
Union member Humayun Kabir said: “The rector (administration) of the university opposed such a low punishment at the meeting. He argued that the job of university professors was lost due to moral depravity. Now when someone is caught cheating on a title, what could be a bigger moral error than this? He offered to fire her. But the union disagreed and demoted him. “
