A human chain was installed on Sunday to protest the attack on a body of water in Sunamganj’s Dharampasha upazila, arson and murder of a fisherman by slitting his throat and demanding a judicial investigation. The human chain was organized by the organization ‘Kshatriya Varman History Practice and Welfare Council’ in Alfat Square in the district city. Subsequently, they delivered a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner with the same demand.

Speakers from the human chain said: “Even if the government rents Jalmahal on behalf of the Fishermen’s Cooperative Society following the policy of ‘Jaal yaar, jala tara’, the real fishermen do not get any profit.” Powerful politicians in the area control these bodies of water. They looted all of Jalmahal’s resources. Ordinary fishermen are constantly tortured. The murder of Shyamacharan Varman is a great proof of this.

The murder took place on the night of January 8 at Sunai Nad Jalmahal in the Paikurati Union of Dharampasha Upazila in Sunamganj. Fisherman Shyamacharan Barman (65) died. Another 15 to 20 people were injured. After the incident, Chandan Barman (30), president of Sunai Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Limited and son of the deceased, local MP Moazzem Hossain alias Ratan (52), his younger brother Mozammel Hossain alias Rokon (32), president of Upazila Parishad and elder Brother Mubarak, secretary for religious affairs of the Upazila Awami League, Hossain alias Masud (55) filed a written complaint against 63 people.
