Former President Donald Trump’s impeachment hearing is scheduled to begin in the United States Senate on February 9.
Trump’s legal team will have more time to prepare when the Senate trial begins in the second week of February, CNN reported Saturday. Additionally, Democrats will have time to pass the Covid-19 bill in the Senate and secure the cabinet of new President Joe Biden.
Democrats in the House of Representatives will deliver the impeachment motion to the Senate next Monday night. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will set a trial date in February.
In announcing the trial schedule Friday night, Chuck Schumer said it would begin on February 8.
“We have made good progress in trying to determine the timing and structure of Donald J. Trump’s impeachment,” he said.
The formal proceedings of the trial are known to begin next week. The motion will be presented on Monday and the senators will be sworn in as judges on Tuesday. Then the trial will be postponed for two weeks. During this time, both House lawmakers and Trump’s legal team will prepare for trial. The impeachment hearing will begin on February 9.
Senate Republicans said Friday that they disagree with the Senate approving new cabinet members and jointly directing Trump’s impeachment. After a split between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate over the trial, the issue was finally set for February, after extensive discussions between Schumer and McConnell.
If impeachment is a little late, that’s good for Democrats too. Biden’s cabinet approval could be blocked if the trial continues. On the other hand, discussions among members of the House on the Covid-19 incentive package proposed by Biden would have been delayed.
President Donald Trump faces impeachment for the second time in his last week in power. He was indicted on January 8 with inciting unprecedented attacks on Capitol Hill during the certification process for the victory of new President Joe Biden.
Trump’s fate will be decided in the upper house, the Senate, after the impeachment motion goes to the House of Representatives. Democrats and Republicans now have the same number in the 100-member Senate. Trump will be forced to resign before the end of his term only if two-thirds of the members agree. At least 16 Republicans in the Senate must vote in favor of impeachment to oust Trump.
A Republican faction in the Senate has already argued that Trump’s trial after his term expires is unconstitutional.
However, Schumer said that legal scholars, both liberal and conservative, said there was a precedent for an impeachment against a former official.
“The impeachment of Donald Trump will begin in the Senate,” he said. It will be a full trial, a fair trial. There is no possibility of thinking anything bad about this. There will be a trial, at the end of the trial the senators will decide whether Donald John Trump has instigated the revolt against the United States or not. ‘
