Rekha Akter and her husband Farhad Ershad have been detained for eight days in a case brought against them for torturing an elderly woman in her 70s in an empty house in Malibagh, the capital.
A pretrial detention hearing was held on Friday in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masudur Rahman. After the hearing, the court granted a preventive detention of eight days.
Previously, Rekha Akhter and her husband Farhad Ershad were held in pre-trial detention for 10 days.
Earlier on Monday, police arrested Rekha Akhter and her husband Ershad in connection with the theft of property worth Tk 21 lakh, including gold ornaments, after brutally torturing a 65-year-old woman in Malibagh, the capital, around 10:15 am. They were arrested in the Ranishankail Police Station area of Thakurgaon District on Thursday morning. At that time, gold ornaments, money and stolen goods were recovered from them. DMP Deputy Commissioner Walid Hossain said this at a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Public Relations and Media Center at 5pm.
