The elections were peaceful in most of the municipalities yesterday despite clashes, beatings, obstruction of agents in the center or isolated incidents. But the BNP did not fare well in the second round of 70 municipal elections in 59 electoral districts. The BNP has won only six municipalities, including two rebels. BNP candidates were not in the fray in almost half of the municipalities.
The winning BNP mayoral candidates are Tofazzal Hossain in Santahar, Bogra, Syed Jahangir Alam in Dinajpur, Chabir Ahmad Chowdhury in Nabiganj and Habibur Rahman in Madhabpur. Jane Alam in Sherpur and Akhter Hossain in Jagannathpur have been elected mayors as rebel candidates. Meanwhile, BNP mayoral candidates in four municipalities boycotted the polls over allegations of electoral irregularities. They are Bhabaniganj, Mongla, Kuliyarchar, and Ishwardi. In Ishwardi, Pabna, BNP candidate Rafiqul Islam was expelled from a polling station and Bhabaniganj candidate Abdur Razzak was unable to vote.
