Tariqul Islam, 45, was stabbed to death in a clash with opposition supporters shortly after his victory in the Sirajganj municipal council elections. Dalim competed for the position of General Counsel for District 6 of Tariqul Township and won by 85 votes.
The clash took place in the Shahidganj area of the city around 8:30 pm on Saturday. Tariqul later died in a private city hospital overnight.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Sadar Police Station, Bahauddin Farooqui, confirmed the death of the newly elected councilor.
Tariqul Islam is the son of Abdul Quddus from New Bhangabari Mahalla in the city.
Citing locals, police said Tariqul was declared the winner after counting the votes in the municipality’s 7th district. Soon after, supporters of the winning candidate clashed with supporters of his closest rival, Shahadat Hossain. Councilor Tariqul Islam, who won the stabbing, was seriously injured in the confrontation. He was later transferred to the hospital.
