BNP-backed councilor Tariqul Islam, 45, was killed in electoral violence in Sirajganj municipality. He was injured in an attack by supporters of the defeated councilman candidate. He died in a private city hospital around 8pm on Saturday (January 18).
Tariqul Islam is the son of Abdul Quddus from New Bhangabari Mahalla in the city. He ran for the position of general counsel for the 8th district of the municipality and won by 85 votes.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Sadar Police Station, Bahauddin Farooqui, confirmed his death.
According to the locals, Tariqul won the elections with 65 votes. Shortly after the results were announced, the winning candidates faced off against supporters of the defeated Shahadat Hossain Buddin (ostrich). Winning councilman Tariqul was seriously injured when supporters of the defeated candidate stabbed him.
When he was transferred to a private hospital in critical condition, the doctor on duty said. Jahidul Islam was declared dead. Meanwhile, clashes between the two sides continue after the death of the newly elected councilor.
Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Golam Mostafa told reporters that a large police force has been deployed in the area to prevent clashes.
