6.2 earthquake shakes Indonesia

At least seven people were killed in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Hundreds of people were injured. Many houses have collapsed. CNN quoted the country’s disaster management agency as saying on Friday.

The epicenter was reported 6 km northeast of the city of Mazen on the island of Sulawesi at a depth of 10 km. Earthquakes last about seven seconds. Although there is a strong earthquake, there is no danger of tsunami.

According to preliminary data from the Disaster Management Agency, four people were killed and 638 injured in the city of Mazen. Three people died in the Mamuju area next door. Many were injured. Many people have been evacuated after the earthquake around 1 pm local time.

Some buildings were completely damaged by the earthquake, Sudirman Samuel, a journalist for the Mamuju-based media outlets, told Reuters. It includes two hotels, the governor’s office, and a shopping center.

The Indonesian Disaster Management Agency said three landslides had occurred in the past 24 hours. Power has been cut off in the affected areas.

In early 2016, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake and tsunami killed thousands of people in Sulawesi.
