Reazul Islam, an eyewitness to the incident, said Liaquat Islam, aka Boltu, Acting General Secretary of the Umedpur Union Awami League, was campaigning for candidate for councilor and incumbent councilor Shawkat Ali, who participated in the municipal elections around 8 : 30 pm. As they passed the Kabirpur temple, supporters of one of the opposition candidates attacked them. Liaquat Islam was stabbed with a sharp weapon and seriously injured. Another was injured at the time. The locals rescued Liaquat Islam and rushed him to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment. But Liaquat Islam died on the way.
Councilor candidate Shawkat Ali, brother of the slain Liaquat Islam, has complained to journalists that his brother was hacked to death by supporters of the symbolic Punjabi councilman candidate Alamgir Khan Babu. However, it was not possible to speak to Alamgir Khan because his mobile phone was switched off.
Kushtia General Hospital Residential Medical Officer Tapash Kumar Sarkar said Liaquat Islam died before reaching the hospital. They found him dead. It is believed that he died on the way.
