In Habiganj, a 15-day-old boy was sold for just Tk 6,000 to raise blood funds for his mother.
The incident took place at Sadar Adhunik Hospital on Saturday night. Later, at 9:30 p.m., with the intervention of the police, the boy was once again in the arms of his parents.
According to hospital sources, Aklima Begum, wife of Rahim Uddin from Mandri village in Baniachang upazila, was admitted to the gynecology department of Sadar Adhunik Hospital on January 8 with excessive bleeding.
At that time, doctors said, five bags of blood were needed. Later, Rahim Uddin, the father of the newborn, decided to sell the child because he could not pay for the blood due to lack of money. Ashkir Mia from Chargaon village of Nabiganj upazila, who brought the patient to the same ward, may be aware of the matter.
At the time, if you were interested in buying the newborn baby, you sold the baby for just Rs 6,000.
Rahim Uddin, the father of the newborn, said his wife gave birth to a girl in their village house 15 days ago. He also has two sons and a daughter. Although there was excessive bleeding during the delivery, she was unable to receive treatment due to lack of money.
When his wife’s condition recently deteriorated, he was taken to Sadar Modern Hospital on January 8.
Doctors said his wife needed five bags of blood. But for lack of money he decided to sell the boy to save his wife.
Aklima Begum, the newborn’s mother, said she could not afford the treatment. I was unable to manage the money even after visiting my parents, siblings and relatives. That is why I was forced to sell the child.
Shamsunnahar Begum, sister of Ashki Miah, who bought the boy, said: “My brother was married 17 years ago.” But they had no children. When I got to the hospital on Saturday, I heard that they would sell a baby. Later, my brother bought the baby.
When the matter came to light, the police arrived on the scene, contacted the couple and brought the boy back. Later, at 9:30 p.m., the boy was returned to his parents.
Helal Uddin, the caretaker at Sadar Hospital, said two bags of blood were delivered from the hospital. But we did not know about the sale of children. The boy was rescued with the help of the police and returned to his parents.
Sadar SI Nazmul Haque Police Station said those who had bought the baby were contacted. Then we put the baby back in the arms of its parents.
