In India, millions of ducks and chickens are being killed after bird flu was detected in the bodies of wild swans, crows and ducks. A week ago flocks of birds died in different states. The BBC reports that the bird flu virus was detected through testing.
Later, the central government issued a ‘high alert’ along with instructions to take urgent action to prevent the spread of the virus. While the risk of the virus spreading to humans is low, the public have been told to stay away from dead or sick birds.
Poultry stores have been closed in many districts. Even the sale of eggs has been stopped. The virus has already been found in other species of birds.
Veterinary pathologist Vikram Singh told BBC Hindi that some 2,400 migratory birds had been found dead in Lake Pong Dam in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. These birds came from Siberia and Mongolia. Vikram Singh said a warning had been issued within 10 kilometers of the Pong Dam area. There are still no signs of bird flu in poultry. However, there are no poultry farms in this area.
