Democrat Rafael Warnock is on track to win the Georgia Senate election, beating Republican Kelly Loffler. The BBC reported on Wednesday, citing several US television channels, that 98 percent of the vote had so far been counted.

If victory is confirmed, Warnock will be the first black senator in the state of Georgia. He will be the eleventh black senator in the history of the United States. Warnock paid tribute to his mother and claimed victory.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump tweeted during the vote count. “It just came to our notice then. I’m waiting to see how many more votes they need.

Democrat John Asaf and Republican David Perdu have received the same number of votes so far. Georgia’s 159 counties have 98 percent of the vote.

Georgia Elections Official Gabriel Sterling told CNN that he expected final results to be available at noon local time Wednesday.
