South Korean warships in the Strait of Hormuz in conflict with Iran

South Korea sent a warship to the Strait of Hormuz after an Iranian tanker was intercepted in the Persian Gulf. Iran’s ambassador to the country has also been summoned.

A destroyer was dispatched to the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf region, the South Korean Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. It also has an anti-piracy unit.

On the same day, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wa said that he had contacted Iran’s Foreign Minister about the matter. He said a delegation would soon be sent to Iran to talk.

Tensions between the two countries have escalated following the seizure of Iranian funds from a South Korean bank due to US sanctions.

Iran’s state television quoted government officials as saying that Seoul’s Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun was in talks to seek the return of the ৭ 600 million seized by Iran.

An official with the Seoul Foreign Ministry said Choi’s trip was not immediately clear.

Iranian media reported Monday that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had seized an oil tanker named Hankook Cami for violating pollution policy. The ship was carrying 7,200 tons of ethanol.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said diplomatic efforts to release the tanker will continue. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the ship had been seized for spreading contamination.
