After being in the morgue at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for 25 days due to legal complications, the body of a teenager named Locking May Chakma (15) was finally recovered. According to court instructions on Monday, after investigating the girl’s religious identity, RAB officials turned over her body to the girl’s father, Lala Aung Chakma.

At that time the bill from the hospital morgue stood at 24 lakhs, which the poor father of the teenager could not pay. The RAB also paid the hospital bill.

The body was delivered by RAB-15 Cox (SI) Bazaar Battalion Deputy Inspector Arjun Chowdhury. Arjun Chowdhury told reporters at the scene that the body of the girl (Locking May) who was lying in the cold room had been handed over to her parents and relatives according to the court order.

The girl’s body was to be taken to her home in the Shilkhali village of Teknaf in the afternoon. But out of fear of the wrongdoers, the decision to take the body to the village was changed and Chakme was buried in Ramu.

Kya J Aung, Vice President of the District Branch of the Bangladesh Indigenous Forum Cox’s Bazar, said: Leaders and activists from various organizations, residents of the Buddhist community and people from the Lakingam family were present at the time.

A year ago, on the night of January 5, 2020, some people led by a local young man, Ataullah, kidnapped Lucking May Chakma from his home. The family was subsequently charged with forced conversion, child marriage and finally planned murder in Comilla.

Locking May died at Ataullah’s home on December 9. Locking May gave birth to a girl 12 days before she died. The newborn is now 36 days old. Ataullah’s home is also in the same union’s Mathabhanga village. His father’s name is Nur Ahmad. The body had been in the freezer since December 9.

SI Arjun Chowdhury said the investigation has found the truth that Lucking May Chakma’s age was not suitable for marriage as a minor. So even though Locking May is married, she has no legal basis. In general, he has been handed over to his family to be cremated according to religious rites. It will be tried in court as a kidnapping case.
