DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam, who visited the Ibrahimpur canal to clean up and evict the squatters, said that no one, no matter how influential, would get an exemption. All the multi-story buildings along the canal will be demolished. According to the map, the illegal structures at the canal site, whether single-story or 10-story, will be demolished.
DNCC Mayor Mohammad Atiqul Islam told reporters after inspecting the Ibrahimpur canal in the capital’s Ibrahimpur area from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and after clearing illegal structures on both sides of the canal.
Mayor Atik said: “We started working to evict the squatters from the canal as soon as we obtained responsibility for the canal from WASA.” This eviction campaign will continue. The operation will be carried out in other channels in phases. During the inspection, several tin shops were evicted along with a three-story building illegally constructed in the canal on both sides of the culvert on the bank of the Ibrahimpur Bazar canal.
The mayor further said that according to the CS survey, illegal structures on both sides of the canal will be dislodged soon by marking the canal boundaries in Dhaka city, the new excavation will increase the water holding capacity, greening by tying benches, building walkways and bike lanes.
During the visit, among others, DNCC Executive Director Md. Selim Reza, Director of Waste Management Commodore M Saidur Rahman, Brigade Chief Engineer General Amirul Islam, Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Md. Shahidul Islam, Counselor District No. 17 Md. Matiur Rahman Mollah, District No. 14 Councilor Humid Johnny was present.
