Paying tribute to Rabia Khatun, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said: “Rabia Khatun has enriched Bengali literature. He has written more than fifty novels and more than four hundred short stories. The disappearance of such a writer is an irreparable loss for Bengali literature. Bigger than that, when he started writing, it wasn’t easy for women. But he has been successful in his work.
“There are not many writers like Rabia Khatun in Bengali literature. I am deeply saddened by her death. I pray that her soul finds peace.”
Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, playwright and freedom fighter, said: “We saw him in a different role in the nationalist movement and the liberation war of the 70s. His writings are very emotional and really represent our freedom fighters.
“The way he has put it in the literature has glorified freedom fighters like us. The way he has brought those who have been martyred through his writing is a subject of our thoughts and discussions.”
Rabia Khatun died at his home in Banani, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon at the age of 65 after suffering a heart attack.
Rabia Khatun, the author of more than fifty novels, used to teach and also journalism. He was a member of the board of Bangla Academy.
In recognition of his contribution to literature, he received the Ekushey Padak in 1993 and the Swadhinata Padak in 2016.
