Nancy Pelosi has been re-elected as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. He was elected president of the new Congress on Sunday by a narrow margin before the departure of President Donald Trump.
Five members of Pelosi’s own party, the Democratic Party, did not support him. Two of them voted for two legislators who are no longer in office, while the other three voted only in the ‘present’ category. As a result, Pelosi won by a margin of 218-209 votes.
Eighty-year-old Nancy Pelosi is the only speaker in American history. He has also led House Democrats for 18 years.
Pelosi said in her speech to Congress: “With the leadership that our predecessors have addressed, we have assumed a more terrible and difficult responsibility than today’s oath. We have started a new Congress at a time when it is very difficult.
“Now is the time to heal the nation,” said the California Democratic leader. Defeating the coronavirus will be our most urgent priority. And we can do it. ‘ He also promised that Congress would allocate more money for this purpose.
Voting takes a few hours to complete. Due to the epidemic, legislators had to vote in many groups while maintaining social distance.
The House of Representatives typically has 435 members, but 426 votes were cast on Sunday. Several newly elected congressmen were unable to appear due to being quarantined for coronavirus.
