At least 69 people have been killed in militant attacks in two villages in the African country of Niger. Reuters quoted the country’s security personnel as saying on Sunday.
At least 49 people were killed in the village of Chombangu, according to a Reuters report. 17 people were injured. On the other hand, 30 more people died in the attack on the town of Jaromdar. These two villages are located near the border with Mali in the west of the country. The state of emergency has been in place in the region since 2016.
Niger’s Interior Minister Alkache Alhada said a search was underway for those responsible for the hellish killings.
Meanwhile, France said on Saturday that two of its soldiers stationed in Mali had died. Hours earlier, an al Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for killing three French soldiers in separate attacks in Mali on Monday.
Al Qaeda and Islamic State (IS) militants often carry out attacks in Niger, a West African country. Experts say this is due to the location of the country. Militant groups such as Al Qaeda or ISIS carry out attacks on the Niger-Mali or Niger-Burkina Faso border. On the other hand, Boko Haram militants attacked the Nigerian border area. As a result, the lives of ordinary people in Niger have become increasingly miserable.
