Indian authorities have ordered the vaccine maker Serum Institute to suspend exports of the coronavirus vaccine for the next several months. As a result of the ban, poor countries may have to wait a few more months to receive the first dose of the corona vaccine.
In an interview to the media, Adar Punawalla, Executive Director of the Serum Institute of India, said: “On Sunday, the Indian policy-making authorities urgently approved the vaccine. But the condition is to ensure the dose for Indians at risk. Therefore, the Serum Institute will not be able to export.
“We can only deliver the vaccine to the Indian government at this time,” he said, citing illegal storage as one of the reasons for the decision.
Punawalla said that Serum would not be able to sell the vaccine in the private market at the moment.
Serum had previously said that it was important to meet the urgent needs of India in the next two months before exporting to interested countries.
India on Friday approved the emergency application of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in the country. India ranks second in the world in number of coronavirus cases.
After the Oxford vaccine was approved in India, there was also hope in Bangladesh. The country’s Health Ministry said it had received the vaccine in January.
In addition, Serum had planned to produce 20 to 300 million doses of the vaccine by December this year.
On November 5, Beximco Pharmaceuticals entered into an agreement with the Serum Institute to receive 30 million doses of the Covidshield vaccine produced by Oxford.
Under this initiative, Serum was supposed to deliver 50 lakh of vaccines to Bangladesh every month for 6 months in the first phase.
However, India’s sudden decision to suspend exports will delay the availability of a vaccine for the deadly virus.
