Death in police custody, family claims to be ‘tortured to death’

A young man sent to jail for a drug case has died in Barisal. Doctors said he was bleeding from the groin when he died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Saturday night. The family of the deceased claimed that he died due to police torture.

The deceased was identified as Rezaul Karim Reza, 30, a student at Barisal Law College. He is the son of Yunus Munshi, a resident of Hamid Khan Road in the 24th district of the city. Police claim that Reza is involved in drug trafficking and that he himself is a drug addict. He was sick because he was addicted to drugs. He died at midnight on Saturday after falling into a prison bathroom.

Abdul Barek Hawlader, the deceased’s uncle, said that SI Mohiuddin Mahi Rezaul was arrested at a tea shop on December 29 at around 8pm. SI Mahi claimed to have received a drug injection from his pocket before he was taken away.

Stating that Rezaul was completely healthy at the time of his arrest, his father Yunus Munshi said: “The police called me around 9pm on Friday and informed me that Rezaul had fallen in the bathroom and was admitted to the hospital due to a hemorrhage. My son died due to police torture.

Abdul Barek said: “We went to the hospital and found Rezaul’s legs, chest and neck with sticks.” He was bleeding from the toilet and urinary tract.

Rezaul’s brother, Azizul Karim, said the police captured Rezaul without any crime. The police had a plan to frame more duj with him. Unable to do that, he was tortured.

Director of the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. Bakir Hossain said that every effort has been made to save Rezaul. The bleeding between her legs couldn’t stop. They also gave him blood. But he could not be saved due to excessive bleeding. However, injuries cannot be reported without an autopsy.

Barisal Central Jail Superintendent Prashant Kumar Banik said: “When Rezaul was sent to jail on the 30th, our doctors saw him and sent him to the district hospital feeling a little sick.” His order indicates that he has injuries to both legs. When he started bleeding from the artery in his leg on Friday, he was sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment and his relatives were informed.

Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police of Detectives. Manzur Hossain stated: ‘The police arrested Rezaul with four injected vials and 137 grams of gauze. He is 100% drug addict and trafficker. For all these reasons he was ill. The police did not torture him.

A three-member committee headed by Deputy Police Commissioner (South) has been established to investigate Rezaul’s death, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Shahabuddin Khan.
