Trade Minister Tipu Munshi said the decision to import new onions would be made in the interest of the country’s consumers and producers.
The Trade Minister was answering a question from journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday (January 3).
He said that India exports onions to Bangladesh at its convenience and stops exporting. Therefore, the government has taken various measures to meet the needs of the country’s population, as it is not dependent on onion imports. Steps have been taken to rapidly increase onion production by using high-quality seeds and encouraging growers. The Trade Minister said that arrangements will be made to store 4-5 lakh of onions in cold storage. Also, onion powder will be marketed throughout the season. Onion production in the country is expected to be self-sufficient in the next three years. Dependence on importing onions will no longer exist, he said.
Responding to a question from reporters, the Commerce Minister said that the market price of potatoes has dropped. TCB has sold potatoes at affordable prices due to the increase in market prices for potatoes. He said that the price of edible oil has risen in the international market. It is a product dependent on imports. That is why it has had a temporary effect in Bangladesh. However, the government is vigilant so that no one can increase the price of goods in a dishonest way.
