After a long hiatus of three and a half months, the importation of Indian onions through the land port of Bhomra resumed from Saturday afternoon. Despite the approval of the Indian government to import onions from Friday (January 1), Indian trucks loaded with onions entered the port of Bhomra on Saturday because it was a holiday.
According to sources from the Bhomra land port, 242 metric tons of Indian onions entered the Bhomra port in 9 trucks through the port as of 5pm on Saturday. In addition, 20-25 trucks loaded with onions are still waiting to enter the Ghojadanga area of India in front of the Bhomra port.
Meanwhile, after a long period of three and a half months, onion imports resumed and activity among port users returned. Prices have also started to fall in the country’s market as new onions start to emerge. Traders expect Indian onion imports to be lower.
Mostafizur Rahman Nasim, General Secretary of the Bhomra Land Port C&F Agents Association, said: “Traders and workers were in big trouble because the importation of onions in Bhomra port was stopped for a long time. With the re-importation of onions from India, the port of Bhomra has returned to normal. We expect the price of onion to drop in the market when the import of Indian onion has started.
Akbar Ali, Bhomra Land Port Revenue Officer, said: “A total of 9 trucks carrying onions have entered Bhomra Port from India as of 5pm. A total of 242 metric tons of Indian onions have been imported.
