After 3 1/2 months, onion import has started again through Hili de Hakimpur upazila land port of Dinajpur.

When the Indian truck entered the country on Saturday (January 2) around 4:15 pm with onions, activity among merchants and port workers has returned.

Onion importers at the port said the Indian Ministry of Trade and Industry stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh on September 14 last year without any announcement. As a result, the importation of onions through Healy land port was stopped and the price of onion increased in the country’s market and importers in the port began importing onions from Myanmar, Pakistan, Turkey and China. This reduces the price of the onion.

Harun Ur Rashid, chairman of the Healy Land Port Import and Export Group, said the shipment of Indian onions had entered the country on Saturday after a long three and a half months. The Indian government stopped onion exports to Bangladesh for no reason. When they lifted the ban on onions on December 26, we made about 6,000 tons of LC through Saturday. In a day or two, imported Indian onions will reach the domestic market. Then it will be sold at 22-25 rupees. Buyers will be able to buy onions at lower prices, he said.

Rezaul Karim, Hili land port warehouse manager Moinul Islam, said local onions are being sold at Tk 30-32 as the onions arrive at the port from India on Saturday. The onion was also sold at Tk 38-40 on Thursday. Now it is down to Rs 7-8 per kg.
