A mural by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon. Police arrested one person in the incident.
Pirganj Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Roy confirmed the matter to The Daily Star on Friday night.
Quoting an eyewitness, OC Pradeep Kumar Roy said: “Nur Alam damaged the right side of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mural by hitting him with a brick around 4:30 pm on Friday. Upon receiving the news, the police went there and immediately arrested Nur Alam.
The video of the vandalism of the Bangabandhu mural has gone viral on social media. It shows Nur Alam striking the Bangabandhu mural with both hands with a brick. And the crowd is watching him.
On December 6, a High Court court ordered the government to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of all Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sculptures and murals across the country.
When asked what kind of security was guaranteed according to the instructions, OC Pradeep Kumar said: “The place where the Bangabandhu mural was vandalized is in the heart of the city. So it is an unexpected event.
“The man was immediately arrested by the police while the police patrol continued,” he said.
He also said that video images were being collected from CCTV cameras installed on the market.
He said Nur Alam was being questioned to find out if anyone else was behind. Preparations are under way to file a case at Pirganj Police Station in this regard.
Meanwhile, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi’s officer, Rezaul Karim, visited the site. He told The Daily Star: “A letter has already been sent to the concerned authorities to ensure security at the site where the Bangabandhu mural is located. The village police have assumed responsibility for the safety of the murals installed in the Union. Parishad.
League president Pirganj Upazila Awami and former MP Imdadul Haque expressed his displeasure, saying: “A section of Jamaat may be involved in the breaking of the Bangabandhu mural.” I strongly condemn this incident and demand exemplary punishment for those involved after a proper investigation.
