1 arrested for vandalizing Bangabandhu mural in Thakurgaon

Police arrested an elderly man named Nur Alam (55) for vandalizing a mural by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon.

Pirganj Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Roy said that the Bangabandhu mural was vandalized around 4:30 pm on Friday (January 1) at the eastern crossing of upazila.

Detainee Nur Alam (55) is the son of Ohidul from Raghunathpur village in Pirganj municipality.

OC Pradeep Kumar Roy said that the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mural was erected at the eastern crossroads of the Pirganj municipal city. At around 4:30 pm on Friday, Nur Alam broke the right side of the mural with a brick. Upon receiving the news, Nur Alam was immediately arrested at the scene.

When speaking to the detainee Nur Alam, he appeared to be mentally unbalanced. Appropriate legal action is being taken against him, said OC Pradeep Kumar.

Meanwhile, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Rezaul Karim and Deputy Commissioner (Land) Tariqul Islam visited the site.

Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi’s officer Rezaul Karim said he was saddened that the Bangabandhu mural was vandalized. Legal action will be taken against the elderly detainee.

He said the detainee was mentally unbalanced, according to locals. However, we are still investigating the matter and if someone else is involved, action will be taken against them.
