This time, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s mural was vandalized in Pirganj upazila of Thakurgaon. Police arrested a man named Nur Alam (55) in the incident. He is a resident of the village of Raghunathpur in the municipal city of Pirganj.
The officer in charge of the Pirganj (OC) police station, Pradeep Kumar Roy, said the incident took place around 4.30pm on Friday.
OC Pradeep said: “The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mural has been erected at the eastern crossroads of the Pirganj municipal city. Nur Alam smashed the right side of the mural with a brick around 4.30pm on Friday. Upon receiving the news, he was immediately detained from the scene.
He further said: “Speaking with the detainee Nur Alam, it seems that he is mentally unbalanced. Appropriate legal action is being taken against him.
Meanwhile, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi (UN) officer Rezaul Karim and Deputy Commissioner (Land) Tariqul Islam visited the site.
ONE Rezaul Karim said: ‘It is sad that the Bangabandhu mural has been vandalized. Legal action will be taken against the detainee.
He added: ‘According to the locals, the detainee is mentally unbalanced. We are still investigating the matter and if anyone else is involved, action will be taken against them.
Earlier on December 4, around 2 pm, criminals vandalized a sculpture under construction at the corner of five roads in the city of Kushtia. At that time, the face and hand of the sculpture were broken. Later, the police arrested four people on suspicion of being involved in the incident after viewing CCTV footage.
