Two tourists died after bathing in Rishang spring

Two tourists named Apu Chandra Das (24) and Pritam Debnath (23) drowned while visiting Rishang Jharna, a tourist spot in Matiranga, Khagrachhari. The tragic incident took place around 4pm on Thursday (December 31).

The deceased were identified as Pritam Debnath, son of the late Dulal Debnath of Rukhai Chowdhury Para in Khagrachhari Sadar and Apu Chandra Das, son of Debabrata Das of Bhangakha village in Laxmipur Sadar.

According to the locals, there is another fountain at the top of the Rishang waterfall. Which is very deep and inaccessible. On Thursday afternoon, when Pritam and Apu went down to the fountain to bathe, they drowned. In the afternoon, the locals saw the body floating in the water and reported it to the police. Later, the police recovered the body with the help of the army.

Sohail, a friend of the late Apu Chandra Das, said that Apu Chandra Das came to visit the home of the father of a student named Swapnil in Khagrachari. From there, Apu went to visit Rishang Jharna with Swapnil’s uncle, Pritam Debnath.

The officer in charge of the Matiranga police station, Muhammad Ali, said they may have drowned in a deep well at the source of the spring. When locals saw the bodies of two tourists floating in the water, the police recovered the two bodies. The body was sent to the Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. It is worth mentioning that on September 8, a schoolboy named Malai Jyoti Chakma (14) drowned in the deep waters of Rishang Jharna while visiting his friends.
