A temple in Pakistan has been attacked and burned. Hundreds of Muslims attacked and destroyed the Hindu temple and set it on fire. The incident took place on Wednesday in a town 100 km north-west of the country, Peshawar. This was reported by Qatar-based Al Jazeera.
Pakistan’s influential media outlet Dawn Online reported that a case was brought against the attackers after the incident. Police arrested 14 people in connection with the incident. They were identified by looking at the video footage.
In a post on social media, it was seen that in response to the call of extremist religious leaders, their followers were beating the temple with hammer and sickle. At the same time, smoke was seen flying around the temple. Witnesses and police said so.
District police chief Irfanullah Khan said that up to 1,200 people had instigated the demolition of the Hindu temple at the instigation of local Muslim religious leaders.
Discrimination and terrorism against the Hindu minority in Pakistan are almost coincidental, reports AFP. The country has a Muslim population of 98 percent and a Hindu population of just 2 percent. Earlier this month, the United States listed Pakistan as a “country of particular concern” religiously.
Irfanullah Khan said that regular worship is not held in the temple. However, it has been abandoned for several years. It was not even noticed during the recent renovation works. After the incident, the police filed a case charging 20 people. They have been identified by looking at the video footage.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Information Minister Kamra Bangas said what happened was true. We consider it a form of heinous terrorism.
Salman Khatak, a local resident and eyewitness, said that a group of Muslims suddenly broke into the temple and set it on fire at the urging of Muslim leaders. However, they have already planned and carried out this destruction.
The leader of the Hindu Council of Pakistan, Ramesh Kumar, said they would go to the Supreme Court to protest the injustice. He said that other minorities in Pakistan, including the Hindu community, were often socially and religiously harassed by the Muslim majority.
