According to the BBC, the study was conducted by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention. If so, 5 percent of Uhan’s population (11 million), or around 5 million people, have been infected.
However, according to the government, the total number of victims is 50,354. If the research data is true, the actual number of victims is roughly 10 times higher than government estimates.
One of the main reasons for the discrepancy between the figures found in the study and the government figures is that they did not perform tests for asymptomatic patients.
CDC authorities said in a statement on WeChat that the study was conducted earlier this year. The researchers collected samples from 34,000 people in Wuhan and Greater Hubei province, Beijing, Shanghai and four other provinces.
After testing, they found antibodies to the coronavirus in 4.43 percent of the samples collected from Uhan. In Hubei province, the rate is 0.44 percent. Outside of Hubei province, antibodies were found in the bodies of just two out of 12,000 people.
A team of international scientists is scheduled to visit Uhan next month to find the source of the coronavirus, which has spread around the world in the form of an epidemic. After months of negotiations, Beijing allowed an independent investigation into the origin of the coronavirus. The results of the study were published before the team moved there.
