The police arrested 19 leaders and activists, including Jamaat’s Upazila Nayeb Ameer, from a secret sabotage meeting in Nilphamari. They were arrested at the Nagarban Jame mosque in Sadar Upazila’s Gorgram Union around 10 am on Tuesday.

Police said 21 Jamaat leaders and activists from different areas gathered at the Nagarban Jame mosque in the Gorgram Union of Sadar Upazila on Wednesday morning. At that time, 19 leaders and activists were detained during a secret meeting led by Abdul Aziz, 54, son of Mofiz Uddin from the Sukhdhan village of Naibe Amir Tupamari Union of Sadar Upazila. The other two escaped.

Among them are Humayun Kabir (32), president of the Gorgram Union Jamaat, and Rashidul Dewan, secretary of the Jamaat of the same union. Among others, 10 are active members of Jamaat and six are sympathizers.

The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Nilphamari Sadar Police Station, Abdur Rauf, said: “21 workers were sitting inside the mosque in the morning and holding a secret meeting to create a sabotage. During the operation, 19 people were arrested. The other two fled at the news of the arrest while out shopping.

He added that six motorcycles, four bicycles, 12 mobile phones, jihadist books, brochures, receipts and other evidence used by them were seized.
