Lightning flashed in 12 villages of Kachikata union in Vedarganj upazila of Shariatpur. AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Deputy Minister of Water Resources and Member of Parliament for the Shariatpur-2 constituency, kicked off work on providing electricity connection to 1,006 families at noon Tuesday by turning on lights in the Kachikata, Charjinking and Borkathi markets. The Char power line has been run via an undersea cable through the bottom of Padma.

According to Munshiganj Pallibidyut Samiti and local sources, the Padma River flows over the Shariatpur district. The Padma River separates Kachikata in Vedharganj, Charatra in Naria, Naupara and Kunderchar in Jajira. At least one lakh people live in 69 villages from those four unions. Chars have to be navigated by water. Local MP and Deputy Minister of Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim took the initiative to provide electrical connection to the chars. But it was not possible to supply electricity from Shariatpur via the Padma River. Then it was decided to bring electricity from Munshiganj through the bottom of Padma with the help of a submarine cable. Work on taking electricity from coal began in February of last year. The first electrical connection began on February 15 in the Charatra and Naopara de Naria Unions.
