Dhaka: The cabinet has approved the draft of the ‘Highway Landscaping Policy of the Department of Roads and Highways-2020’.
The approval came at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (December 26).
In a briefing at the Secretariat after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said that the policy is to take the necessary measures to reduce the adverse effects of tree planting and climate change according to plan.
He said the land acquisition was made with the landscaping theme in mind in the highway corridor plan. For example, water management and tree planting can be done along the road, and the land will be acquired accordingly. There are also fuel facilities along the highway.
The cabinet secretary said that the trees to be planted along the road would be in contact with the forest department which is long-lived and suitable for our road, so that the leaves and twigs do not fall to the road and the water does not fall from there .
Environment in harmony with nature, historical buildings, archaeological heritage, areas rich in biodiversity must be preserved in coordination with landscaping. If there is something on the street that is related to our history and tradition, then we have to save it as much as possible.
In case of road construction in forests, the removal of a minimum number of trees should be taken into account and, in that case, the necessary facilities for the passage of animals (movement of animals) should be provided according to the advice of wildlife experts.
He added that if a tree is cut on the side of the road, five trees will have to be planted. Trees that are suitable in that area should be felled from the forest department.
The cabinet secretary said that trees could be planted by sharing on the roads, adding that it should be done on the basis of 80 and 40 percent. The one who will plant the tree will keep it.
