He said: “One of the mayoral candidates has died. The EC received preliminary information from the hospital 10 minutes before the end of the vote. According to the rules, the election for the office of mayor must be canceled and a new vote must be taken. Therefore, for the moment, the results of the position of mayor in the municipality of Chalna have been postponed and brought to the attention of the commission for the next issue. They will decide. ”

Along with 23 other municipalities across the country, the EVM voting also took place in Chalna de Dakop upazila de Khulna from 8 am to 4 pm on Monday.

In addition to BNP’s Abul Khair Khan, Awami League’s Sanat Kumar Biswas, independent candidates Achintya Kumar Mandal and Gautam Kumar Roy also contested the position.

Abul Khair Khan, 60, has been receiving treatment for coronavirus at Khulna Medical College Hospital since December 23. He died there around 3:30 pm on Monday.

A few hours ago, Upazila BNP’s main electoral representative, Abdul Mannan Khan, announced Abul Khair Khan’s boycott of the elections at a press conference at the party’s office.

He said, ‘due to irregularities in the elections’ candidate. Abul Khair Khan has decided to boycott the elections.

Chalna Municipality’s journey began in November 2004. BNP leader at the time. Abul Khair Khan served as a municipal administrator.

In the 2011 elections, current mayor Sanat Kumar Biswas lost to former mayor Achintya Kumar Mandal.

Then in the 2015 elections it was the other way around. Sanat Biswas won with the support of the Awami League and BNP-backed candidate Sheikh Abdul Mannan came third. In that election, Achintya Mandal lost to the Awami League nominated candidate.
