Decision to change Zia’s name at Bogra school postponed

The High Court suspended the order for the appointment of two schools in Gabtali upazila de Bogra for six months by changing the name of the late President Ziaur Rahman. Earlier, on April 19, a memorandum from the Ministry of Education mentioned the name of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Girls’ Secondary School as Sukhanpukur Bandar Girls’ Secondary School and the name of Gabtali Shaheed Zia Girls’ Secondary School as Gabtali Purbapara Secondary School. The chairman of the management committee filed two separate writ petitions on behalf of the two educational institutions regarding the validity of the name change.
The court heard the writ on behalf of lawyer Ruhul Quddus, accompanied by lawyer Akhtar Rasool. Assistant Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy and Assistant Attorney General Farhana Parveen were present at the hearing on behalf of the state.

Lawyer Ruhul Quddus told Prothom Alo: “A memorandum from the Ministry of Education on April 19 shows that the names of the two educational institutions have been changed. Ziaur Rahman’s name was changed at school without mentioning any reason. A separate order was filed on its validity. Since the denomination order has been suspended, the activities of the two educational institutions will continue under the same name. It has been asked why the new denomination will not be illegal and why the old denomination will not be restored.
