Touhidul Islam Siam, 22, a student at Dhaka University (DU), committed suicide by hanging himself at his home in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur. Siam was a third-year student (academic year 2016-17) in the Department of Zoology at DU. He was a resident student of the Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall.

Siam’s body was recovered from his home on Nurjahan Road in Mohammadpur on Sunday morning, his uncle Mukul Hossain said. He said: ‘Siam slept alone in his room at night. After knocking in the morning and not opening the door, the door was found to be broken and he committed suicide by hanging himself with a fan. He could not give the reason for Siam’s suicide.

Mukul Hossain said that Siam was buried in Keraniganj on Sunday night. Siam is the only son of Rafiqul Islam from the village of Hijla in the Shakta union of Keraniganj upazila. He was at home with his parents in Mohammadpur at the time of the coronavirus epidemic.

Quoting the family, the OC said: ‘Before being admitted to Dhaka University, he had a love affair with a girl. Later, when the girl had a chance in medicine, she distanced herself. Apart from this, they see no other reason. He said Siam’s father was allowed to bury the body without an autopsy as there were no complaints.
